Frequent Headaches: Is It Migraine or Cluster Headache?
Headaches are common, but frequent or recurring headaches should not always be ignored. The type, location, duration, intensity, and associated symptoms can provide important clues about the underlying cause.
Two neurological conditions that can cause severe headaches are migraine and cluster headache. Although both can produce significant pain, they have different patterns and symptoms.
What Is a Migraine?
Migraine is a neurological condition that can cause moderate to severe headache, often with a throbbing or pulsating quality. It may be accompanied by:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Sensitivity to light and sound
- Worsening of pain with routine physical activity
- Visual disturbances or other warning symptoms in some people
Migraine attacks can last for several hours and, in some cases, longer.
What Is a Cluster Headache?
Cluster headache is a less common but extremely painful type of headache. It typically causes severe pain on one side of the head, often around or behind one eye.
It may also be associated with symptoms such as:
- Red or watery eye
- Stuffy or runny nose on the affected side
- Drooping or swelling around the eye
- Restlessness or agitation
Cluster headaches can occur repeatedly over a period of time, known as a cluster period.
Migraine or Cluster Headache?
While both conditions can cause severe headaches, their patterns can be quite different.
Migraine:
Usually lasts hours and may be associated with nausea and sensitivity to light or sound.
Cluster headache:
Often produces extremely severe one-sided pain around the eye and can occur repeatedly in attacks.
However, headache diagnosis should be based on a proper medical evaluation rather than symptoms alone.
When Should You See a Neurologist?
Consider consulting a neurologist if your headaches:
- Occur frequently or are becoming more severe
- Interfere with work, sleep, or daily activities
- Keep returning despite self-treatment
- Have changed in their usual pattern
- Are accompanied by unusual neurological symptoms
A neurologist can assess your symptoms and headache pattern and determine whether further evaluation or treatment is needed.
Don't Just Keep Treating the Pain
If you are experiencing frequent headaches, recurrent migraines, or severe one-sided headaches, getting the right diagnosis is an important first step toward appropriate management.
